The Muse

“Look! You have a brand new year in front of you! Time to undertake what you did not do last year…”

Her voice was not that I remembered, somewhat deeper, coming from further away. “I know, all these things I thought of, and never started. The books I did not read, the pictures I did not take, the walks… And, yes, the unfinished novel, all that editing, waiting.” Her shape was vague, melting in the January half light. Time stood still. It was brighter now, and she became invisible in the shadows.

But I had recognised her, and she knew. Unlike the knight of the Seventh Seal I would not play chess. I took the warning for what it was: I still have some time, but not eternity.

Game over.
